Achilles Tendon Repair

What is Achilles Tendon Repair?

It is a surgical procedure used to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

What is the treatment for a ruptured Achilles tendon?

It is usually conservative (non-operative) in a Controlled Ankle Motion (CAM) boot or it may require surgery.

Most surgeons opt for conservative treatment, however, surgery may be considered if you re-rupture your Achilles tendon or if there’s a two weeks delay between when you ruptured your tendon, when a diagnosis was made and commencement of conservative bracing and treatment.

I had a ruptured Achilles tendon surgery, what next?

Most surgeons will recommend that you commence physiotherapy one week after surgery.

What is the goal of physiotherapy?

  • To reduce pain and swelling.

  • To prevent ankle stiffness.

  • To improve range of movement in the ankle.
