Heart Surgery

What is Heart Surgery?

It is any type of surgery where the chest is cut open and surgery is performed on the muscles, valves, or arteries of the heart. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most common type of heart surgery done on adults.

When is heart surgery needed?

  • May be necessary for people with coronary heart disease

  • To repair or replace heart valves, which allow blood to travel through the heart

  • To repair damaged or abnormal areas of the heart

  • To implant medical devices that help the heart beat properly

  • To replace a damaged heart with a donated heart

What is the role of physiotherapy after a heart surgery?

Physiotherapy is an essential part of recovery following your operation.

  • Children who have had heart surgery often need chest physiotherapy to help prevent and reduce lung complications. Physiotherapy will also help your child move safely after surgery

  • Physiotherapy treatment is often prescribed to patients undergoing cardiac surgery, in order to prevent or diminish postoperative complications

  • Pre- and postoperative physical therapy treatment is often prescribed to cardiac surgery patients during the hospital stay

  • Rehabilitation after discharge from the hospital continues through cardiac rehabilitation programmes supervised by a physiotherapist
