Hip Replacement

What is Hip Replacement?

It is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant/a hip prosthesis. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a partial replacement.

Do I need physiotherapy if I am having a hip replacement?

Yes. Physiotherapy is important before and after the hip replacement surgery to enable you return to pain-free functional daily activities.

What conditions can make you require a hip replacement?

  • Avascular necrosis of the hip

  • Hip osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Childhood hip disease

  • Post-traumatic arthritis

When should I opt for a hip replacement surgery?

  • When hip pain severely restricts your everyday activities like walking

  • When hip pain is constant both day and night, at rest and when doing mild activities

  • Severe stiffness that restricts your hip movement

  • When you do not get pain relief after a combination of these treatment – taking anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy and walking supports

  • When your x-ray, CT scan or MRI shows significant injury that requires surgery
