Muscle Spasms

What is Muscle Spasm?

They are involuntary contraction of a muscle and are common and are often due to overuse and muscle fatigue, dehydration, and electrolyte abnormalities. They occur abruptly, are painful, and are usually short-lived.

Are muscle spasms the same as muscle cramps?

Yes.

Can physiotherapy help people with muscle spasms?

Yes. A comprehensive physiotherapy assessment will be carried out to ascertain the cause of your muscle spasm and a corresponding treatment plan will be developed to break the pain-muscle spasm cycle.

What causes muscle spasms?

  • It occurs when a muscle is overused, tired, injured or previously strained

  • It occurs if a muscle has been overstretched or remained in the same position for a prolonged period

  • Dehydration

  • Narrowing of arteries resulting in inadequate blood supply

  • Exercise

  • Trauma

  • Diseases of the nervous system like multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury

  • Wearing high heels for a prolonged period
