What is Myositis?
It is a chronic, progressive inflammation of the muscles you use to move your body. There are five types of myositis:
- dermatomyositis
- inclusion-body myositis
- juvenile myositis
- polymyositis
- toxic myositis
What are the causes of myositis?
The exact cause of myositis is not known. Researchers believe that it may be cause by autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus; viruses such as flu, HIV, and common cold; and drug toxicity.
Can physiotherapy help people with myositis?
Yes. Physiotherapy is an important part of the myositis treatment plans and it is effective in relieving pain, reducing inflammation and fatigue and improving balance.
What are the common symptoms of myositis?
Unusual rash
Tripping or falling frequently
Muscle pain
Muscle weakness
Joint pain
Fatigue
Difficulties with movements like walking, stair climbing and trouble reaching over your head
Balance problems
