What is Slipped Disc?

It refers to injury sustained to the intervertebral disc of the spine. It is more common in the lower back.

Can physiotherapy help people with slipped discs?

Yes. In mild and moderate cases of slipped discs, physiotherapy is an effective treatment and patients recover without the need for surgery. Surgery is only recommended in more sever cases.

What are the causes of slipped discs?

  • Ageing

  • Awkward heavy lifting

  • Overweight and obesity

  • Pre-existing weakness of the structural component of the spine’s intervertebral disc

  • Sudden unexpected loading of the spine

  • Poor posture

  • Genetic factors

How do I know if I have a slipped disc?

  • Lower back pain that is aggravated by sitting, bending forward, coughing, sneezing or lifting

  • Pain when walking short distances

  • Leg pain

  • Inability to straighten your back

  • In more severe cases, numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the affected area
