What is Stroke?

It occurs when there is a damage to the brain from interruption of its blood supply.

Can physiotherapy help people with stroke?

Yes. Physiotherapists are involved early in the management of people with stoke with the aims of preventing complications, minimising impairments and maximising functions.

What are the causes of stroke?

  • High blood pressure

  • A type of irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation (AF)

  • Cigarette smoking

  • Excessive alcohol intake

  • Overweight or obesity

  • Diabetes

  • High cholesterol

  • Inadequate physical activity

  • Smoking

  • Taking anticoagulant medicines

  • Bleeding disorder

  • Previous brain/head injury

How do I know if I have a stroke?

You will experience the following symptoms:

  • Sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in their face or limbs, particularly down one side of their body
  • Muscle spasms

  • Joint pain

  • Appearing confused

  • Problems with concentration or memory

  • Trouble talking or understanding what is being said to them

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Visual impairments

  • Difficulty walking

  • Unsteadiness or a sudden fall

  • Difficulty with coordination and balance

  • Sometimes a seizure (fit) or loss of consciousness occurs

  • A person may feel sick and look pale and unwell

  • A complain of a sudden headache or dizziness
